    Mortenson's Chicago office is seeking a Design Phase Executive who will work to ensure the owner’s vision is translated into design solutions and construction parameters through leadership of the design process and team members, as well as assist operating group with winning work. This individual may work on complex and/or large projects in healthcare, higher education, mission critical and corporate market sectors.


    Manage the design process

    1. Work closely with customers/owners to define completed project expectations, including key factors to focus on within the design phase, and craft communication strategies to address and regularly update customer on project progress and concerns
    2. Facilitate the solicitation, selection, and contracting with designers for design build projects
    3. Develop and/or lead the preparation and presentation of project proposals
    4. Develop detailed project design phase and baseline construction schedules
    5. Conduct detailed construction planning; including contract manual, subcontractor selections, MWD/BE participation, trade and site utilization planning, disruption avoidance planning, and owner direct purchase planning within principles of Lean Design Delivery and utilization of BIM/VDC technology
    6. Lead design team members in facilitating designs incorporating constructability, logistics solutions, identifying customers’ expectations, and critical success factors, providing meaningful input to project’s programming and conceptual design activities
    7. Ensure critical success factors are defined, tracked, and integrated into PES process
    8. Manage costs of the design phase; including estimate preparation, technical estimating, valued engineering, life-cycle analysis, and budgetary/financial management
    9. Ensure regulatory approvals are obtained and risk management requirements are met for insurance, bonding, owner contract, and subcontractor T & Cs
    10. Implement LEED tracking and analysis


    Establish and maintain successful customer relationships

    1. Model and set the tone for exceptional customer relations, gathering feedback and clarification during design process, as well as identifying future projects and collaboration
    2. Participate in Request for Proposal process, developing content for proposals
    3. Act as primary customer contact for targeted pursuits and assigned projects
    4. Maintain customer relationships to be aware of current and future projects
    5. Support business development initiatives in establishing and building on client relationships



    Oversight and supervision of design phase team members

    1. Mentor Design Phase Engineers and encourage career development and growth
    2. Ensure team members have resources and support
    3. Provide work direction and performance evaluations
    4. Identify hiring needs and participate in hiring, discipline, and dismissal decisions as needed


    Other duties as assigned

    1. Manage site work and logistics efficiently, providing suggestions for improvement
    2. Perform market research for future design and construction opportunities; may take lead for specific market segment





    1. Strong teamwork orientation, initiative, communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
    2. Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks
    3. Possess basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
    4. Microsoft Office, Project, and pertinent web application skills at an intermediate level
    5. Proven positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills
    6. Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies to team members and outside parties

    1. Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, or Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, Estimating, or equivalent field
    2. Minimum of 15 years of similar experience
    3. Current driver’s license
