Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Drafter II with the ability to interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever-changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The Drafter II position is responsible for the drawing preparation, setup, and drafting for high voltage substation and transmission projects.  Candidate will be responsible for working closely with other engineering, design, and estimating team members to coordinate overall design package and requirements.  They will be responsible for performing a broad scope of CADD drafting assignments of moderate difficulty.



  • Works with direction from Engineering Lead
  • Provide CADD support for proposals, estimating, procurement, construction and design change scoping packages in support of the engineering process
  • The candidate may prepare or assist in preparing and developing the engineering drawings and deliverables for electric substation projects - including the drawing of one line and three line diagrams; relay & control schematics and wiring diagrams; control and relaying panel layouts and equipment wiring diagrams; plan, profile and physical electrical and/or civil arrangement drawings, and the overall bill of materials with engineering oversight.
  • Candidate may prepare plan and profile drawings and structure assembly drawings as they are related to transmission line and power substation design, determination of material and drafting hour requirements
  • Responsible for producing/interpreting highly complex drawings, revisions to original drawings, required for construction, modification and operation of facilities and related systems in compliance with the projects specifications, standards, processes and procedures
  • Maintains a variety of related records, databases and reports
  • Responsible for handling multiple projects and providing a detailed design package that complies with applicable engineering design standards and all safety codes
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects
  • Ability to revise existing drawings and prepare new drawings of standard components from explicit verbal or written instructions or detailed sketches
  • Standard understanding of discipline specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies


Required Skills:


  • Proficient in drafting with the ability to perform standard drafting assignments independently
  • Responsible for accurately completing standard CAD Drafting projects as outlined by Engineer or Designer in compliance with the design standards and processes
  • Provide technical drafting support in the creation of construction drawing sets, insure drafting schedules are met including regularly providing project status updates to Project Engineer
  • Effectively plan, organize, schedule and monitor work activities
  • Thoroughly and accurately develop correspondence, documentation and sketches
  • Learn and follow company and client drawing standards and procedures
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with shifting priorities
  • Knowledge of business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
  • Can conduct project detailed designs aligned with our customer requirements and Mortenson’s best practice standards
  • Review of CADD work produces a first time review rate of documents at 90% correct
  • Have working knowledge of or are familiar with software packages: AutoCAD, MicroStation, Primtech, Revit, Civil 3-D, Geopak, InRoads. Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access)
  • Experience in T&D Industry
  • Proficient in CADD theories and principles
  • Proficiency in the use of computer-aided design software and MS office
  • Minimum two (2) years related work experience



  • Graduate with an Associate’s degree in CADD is preferred, but not required, or two-year technical degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent.
