Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Business Development Engineer with the ability to interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever-changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are vital, with attention to detail equally important. The Business Development Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of Business Development goals.


  • Provide assistance to the business development manager, executive and director on market sector positioning, and lead research for current and future markets
  • Serve as a networking link with engineering consultants and subcontractors
  • Perform research, compile market data, customer cold calling, and networking in support of business lead prospecting efforts
  • Assist with scheduling customer meetings
  • Perform technical writing in support of proposals, qualifications, submittals and branding materials.
  • Ensure schedules are met and various aspects of the proposal (Technical Scope, Staff Qualification and Experience, and Biographical Data, etc.), as well as marketing materials are accurate and delivered in a timely manner
  • Support proposal preparation, including gathering, verifying, and formatting proposal information
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for customer presentations
  • Attend pre-proposal meetings
  • Perform general coordination of information between business development and preconstruction
  • Coordinate and participate in business development activities such as trade show appearances, conventions, and conferences
  • Support the business development team with administrative functions, such as meeting minutes, customer satisfaction surveys, file maintenance, and lead data management, and customer data management
  • Ability to respond to a variety of requests in an ever-changing environment while meeting expected deadlines. 


Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of engineering, equipment specifications, and/or construction
  • Detail orientation sufficient for data entry, reporting, financial projections for sales and selections, and market analysis
  • Microsoft Office, project and pertinent web application skills at an intermediate level
  • Current driver’s license
  • Minimum three years power generation or transmission industry related experience
  • Travel of up to 30% of time may be necessary to fulfill the objectives of the position.  

Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of North American transmission market and the participants, specifically utilities and independent transmission providers
  • Proficient in power engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) delivery methods, specifically substation and transmission line design, equipment and construction
  • Prior business development experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Construction Management, Engineering or related field
