Mortenson Construction is seeking a Director of Project Planning. The success of any project starts with understanding construction risk and developing a proactive plan to optimize construction flow to effectively manage risk. The Director will provide company leadership and future direction for project planning and work execution methodologies, and support project teams to measure and manage against their plans.


The Director of Project Planning will be a leader who is both a visionary and a coach who can guide our company planners (Superintendent, Project Managers, Schedulers). He or she will be responsible for developing a framework of standardization for implementing and measuring performance of lean planning to field operations with the goal of delivering a safer, higher quality and more productive project while minimizing risk.



  • Define company-wide strategic direction for project work planning and execution road-map.
  • Integrate vision and objective for project work planning with the organization’s pursuit of Lean and Innovation.
  • Govern company policies and procedures to provide project teams with the guidance to effectively plan, measure, and manage to reduce project risk.
  • Partner with Technical Leaders (including Quality, Safety, Lean Innovation) and operating groups to advance the company’s project planning practices.
  • Leadership and mentorship of planners including superintendents, foremen, schedulers across the company. 
  • Document and share best practices/lessons learned to drive consistency and continuous improvement in company practices.
  • Maintain and continually improve Mortenson’s project planning learning, development and training program to meet the needs of the growing business.
  • Develop and implement just-in-time training and planning support for project teams across the organization.
  • Develop and implement Planning key performance indicators and assessment methodology.
  • Evaluate and elevate usage of new processes, tools and technology to the appropriate level of enterprise adoption.
  • Investigate, test, pilot and expand new planning solutions through partnership with Operating Group planners and schedulers.
  • Collaborate with ITS department to administer Planning and Scheduling technology.
  • Responsible for Planning function's financial budget and annual expenses.
  • Quarterly reporting of department status to business and operations leaders. 


Providing company-wide direction for overall management of construction planning activities in the following areas:

  • Ensure project plan incorporates resource planning (people, material and equipment) and inspections process.
  • Alignment of project budget, forecasting, craft labor management, equipment and materials.
  • Review of construction documents for completeness and constructability.
  • Ensure consistency in the creation, review and updating of project schedules and look ahead planning.
  • Development and implementation of site logistics and utilization planning.
  • Conducting effective pre-construction planning sessions and project site meetings.

  • Expert in Master Project Planning.
  • Fluent in Primavera (P6).
  • Strong working knowledge of project planning principles such as CPM, LBS, WBS and The Last Planner System®.
  • Working knowledge of solutions such as MS Project, ASTA PowerProject, NetPoint, Synchro 4D, etc.
  • Working knowledge of 4D visual planning methodologies.
  • Working Knowledge of construction contracts and generally accepted business practices 

Education and Experience:

  • Proven success implementing Lean construction methodologies including Last Planner techniques.
  • Previous experience in leading and developing a company-wide program for project planning and management.
  • Proven experience with planning for field operations, work packaging, and managing trade flow.
  • Previous experience as superintendent or project manager on construction projects is preferred.
  • Commercial construction industry experience required.
  • Practical work experience in scheduling risk mitigation/claims.
  • Relevant experience developing a project schedule and collaborating with project team to make the plan construction ready.
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related degree.
  • Minimum 12 years related industry experience.
